SEATTLE (AP) — Clint Dempsey scored on a header in the 36th minute, and the Seattle Sounders stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-0 victory against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. The win lifted Seattle (10-7-7, 37 points) into a tie with Kansas City atop the Western Conference. Sporting (9-5-10, 37 points), which was coming off a penalty-kick shootout win against San Jose in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on Wednesday night, lost a nine-game MLS unbeaten streak and a club record-tying 13-game overall unbeaten run. “It’s confidence — that’s what happens when you get on a streak like we’re on,” Dempsey said of Seattle’s current 5-0-3 run. “There are defining moments of the season when a team has to dig deep and show a lot of character. The moments that stand out to me are being 3-0 down versus New England and coming back and drawing that game, and being 3-0 down to D.C. United and coming back to win 4-3. “I think those type of gut-check moments are when a team could fold, but we showed resilience and character. That helps with momentum.” Dempsey’s goal was his team-leading 10th of the season and third in the last two games. After regaining control of the ball high on the right wing side, Jordan Morris took it toward the end line and floated a cross into the penalty area. Dempsey met it 8 yards in front of the net and headed it into the back right corner past KC goalkeeper Tim Melia. “It was a great ball from Jordan. I just tried to get good contact on the ball and was able to do that,” Dempsey said. “It was perfect pace. I don’t have to do much, just redirect it a little bit.” Goalkeeper Stefan Frei picked up his fourth straight shutout, a club record. The Sounders extended their shutout streak to 400 minutes, breaking the club record of 379. “A record like that is only achievable as a team,” Frei said. “There’s offense and defense, and sometimes, people try to focus too much on dividing the teams into whatever players’ roles are. But we think the goalkeeper is the first attacker, and the striker is the first defender. So we’re all on the same page when we try to do something offensively and defensively.” Kansas City coach Peter Vermes was not displeased with his team’s play, despite not getting a result. “I don’t think we got worked over by any means,” he said. “We were good on the ball. The only area I didn’t think we were good today was we really weren’t dangerous in the final third. We didn’t put a ton of pressure on them around the goal. Other than that, I thought our game was good. They had one chance, and they scored.” The Sounders had not defeated Kansas City since the 2014 season opener, going 0-4-2 and getting outscored 9-1 since then, including a 3-0 loss at Kansas City on May 17. from FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV | News, Weather, Sports http://fox4kc.com/2017/08/12/dempsey-leads-sounders-past-sporting-kc-1-0-in-battle-of-western-conference-leaders/ from https://kansascityhappenings.wordpress.com/2017/08/13/dempsey-leads-sounders-past-sporting-kc-1-0-in-battle-of-western-conference-leaders/

Charlottesville car crash suspect identified arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder8/12/2017 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The suspect being held in a Virginia jail in connection with a deadly crash near a scheduled rally of white nationalists has been identified as James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, according to Superintendent Martin Kumer with the Albermarle-Charlottesville County Regional Jail . Fields is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death. One person died and 19 were injured Saturday when a car rammed a crowd of counterprotesters gathered to oppose a “Unite the Right” rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups. Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said the suspect was taken into custody not far from the crash site. Thomas told reporters a 32-year-old woman was killed while she was crossing the street. Her name was not released. “What the world saw today is not the place Charlottesville is,” Thomas said of the violence that preceded the scheduled rally. “We love our city. Let us heal. This is not our story. Outsiders do not tell our story. We will tell our own story.” Police said only that the crash is under investigation and have not commented on specific aspects of the crash. Developing story – more to come from FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV | News, Weather, Sports http://fox4kc.com/2017/08/12/986372/ from https://kansascityhappenings.wordpress.com/2017/08/13/charlottesville-car-crash-suspect-identified-arrested-on-suspicion-of-second-degree-murder/ Officials say 3 deaths linked to white nationalist rally in Virginia between car helicopter crashes8/12/2017 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A car plowed into a crowd of people peacefully protesting a white nationalist rally Saturday in a Virginia college town, killing one person, hurting at least two dozen more and ratcheting up tension in an increasingly violent confrontation. A helicopter crash that killed the pilot and a passenger later in the afternoon outside Charlottesville also was linked to the rally by State Police, though officials did not elaborate on how the crash was connected. The chaos boiled over at what is believed to be the largest group of white nationalists to come together in a decade: the governor declared a state of emergency, police dressed in riot gear ordered people out and helicopters circled overhead. The group had gathered to protest plans to remove a statue of the Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, and others who arrived to protest the racism. Matt Korbon, a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, said several hundred counter-protesters were marching when “suddenly there was just this tire screeching sound.” A silver Dodge Challenger smashed into another car, then backed up, barreling through “a sea of people.” The impact hurled people into the air. Those left standing scattered, screaming and running for safety in different directions. The driver was later arrested, authorities said. The turbulence began Friday night, when the white nationalists carried torches though the university campus in what they billed as a “pro-white” demonstration. It quickly spiraled into violence Saturday morning. Hundreds of people threw punches, hurled water bottles and unleashed chemical sprays. At least eight were injured and one arrested in connection. President Donald Trump condemned “in the strongest possible terms” what he called an “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides” after the clashes. He called for “a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives.” Trump says he’s spoken with the governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, and “we agreed that the hate and the division must stop and must stop right now.” But some of the white nationalists cited Trump’s victory as validation for their beliefs, and Trump’s critics pointed to the president’s racially tinged rhetoric as exploiting the nation’s festering racial tension. The Rev. Jesse Jackson noted that Trump for years publicly questioned President Barack Obama’s citizenship. “We are in a very dangerous place right now,” he said. Right-wing blogger Jason Kessler had called for what he termed a “pro-white” rally in Charlottesville. White nationalists and their opponents promoted the event for weeks. Oren Segal, who directs the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, said multiple white power groups gathered in Charlottesville, including members of neo-Nazi organizations, racist skinhead groups and Ku Klux Klan factions. The white nationalist organizations Vanguard America and Identity Evropa; the Southern nationalist League of the South; the National Socialist Movement; the Traditionalist Workers Party; and the Fraternal Order of Alt Knights also were on hand, he said, along with several groups with a smaller presence. On the other side, anti-fascist demonstrators also gathered in Charlottesville, but they generally aren’t organized like white nationalist factions, said Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Many others were just locals caught in the fray. Colleen Cook, 26, stood on a curb shouting at the rally attendees to go home. Cook, a teacher who attended the University of Virginia, said she sent her son, who is black, out of town for the weekend. “This isn’t how he should have to grow up,” she said. Cliff Erickson leaned against a fence and took in the scene. He said he thinks removing the statue amounts to erasing history and said the “counter-protesters are crazier than the alt-right.” “Both sides are hoping for a confrontation,” he said. It’s the latest confrontation in Charlottesville since the city about 100 miles outside of Washington, D.C., voted earlier this year to remove a statue of Lee. In May, a torch-wielding group that included prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer gathered around the statue for a nighttime protest, and in July, about 50 members of a North Carolina-based KKK group traveled there for a rally, where they were met by hundreds of counter-protesters. Kessler said this week that the rally is partly about the removal of Confederate symbols but also about free speech and “advocating for white people.” “This is about an anti-white climate within the Western world and the need for white people to have advocacy like other groups do,” he said in an interview. Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer said he was disgusted that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed Trump for inflaming racial prejudices. “I’m not going to make any bones about it. I place the blame for a lot of what you’re seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president,” he said. Charlottesville, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a liberal-leaning city that’s home to the flagship University of Virginia and Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. The statue’s removal is part of a broader city effort to change the way Charlottesville’s history of race is told in public spaces. The city has also renamed Lee Park, where the statue stands, and Jackson Park, named for Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. They’re now called Emancipation Park and Justice Park, respectively. For now, the Lee statue remains. A group called the Monument Fund filed a lawsuit arguing that removing the statue would violate a state law governing war memorials. A judge has agreed to temporarily block the city from removing the statue for six months. from FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV | News, Weather, Sports http://fox4kc.com/2017/08/12/officials-say-3-deaths-linked-to-white-nationalist-rally-in-virginia-between-car-helicopter-crashes/ from https://kansascityhappenings.wordpress.com/2017/08/12/officials-say-3-deaths-linked-to-white-nationalist-rally-in-virginia-between-car-helicopter-crashes/ CLINTON, Mo. — A Clinton Police officer killed in the line of duty was laid to rest Saturday. Officer Gary Michael was killed Sunday, Aug. 6 during a traffic stop. A two-day manhunt for the suspect followed, culminating with the arrest of Ian McCarthy, who is now jailed and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. An alleged accomplice, William Noble, was arrested Thursday and is charged with evidence tampering for allegedly tossing the gun following the murder. All week, the community of Clinton has rallied around Officer Michael’s family. Flags and Thin Blue Line posters are all over town. Hundreds turned out to two visitations, Friday evening and Saturday morning. The Clinton Community Center was packed for Saturday’s funeral service. Police from around the nation participated in the funeral procession, accompanied by more than 125 Patriot Guard Riders. Inside the service, more than a thousand friends, family and brothers and sisters in law enforcement came to pay their respects to Officer Michael.
“Many are here not because he died in the line of duty, but because of how he lived. Death doesn’t make heroes. Life does,” said officiant Dr. Randy Shipman. The officer’s tragic death has brought the community together. The officer’s family is drawing on their deep faith as they grieve, and are hoping to inspire others. “God says He works all things together for the good of those called to His purpose. Gary was called to His purpose and out of tragedy, life can be brought,” said Officer Michael’s brother, Chris Michael. Governor Eric Greitens insisted this time of healing and mourning should also serve as a call to action. “Let’s all pledge to support police who keep us safe. Support their families, and devote our ideals to the ideals by which Officer Michael lived: courage, sacrifice, honor and duty. That’s our task,” said Gov. Greitens. That kind of vast support has been abundantly evident in Clinton. “We express our deepest appreciation for you, and for your service and commitment to our communities,” said Dr. Shipman. Filing from the service, hundreds of officers were sent back to the streets to serve and protect. It’s a tribute, sacrifice, and life that won’t soon be forgotten, and a legacy that will endure. Part of how Officer Michael’s memory will live in is through a trust fund established in his name. It will fund scholarships for those who want to pursue careers in law enforcement The fund in his name is set up at US Bank. You may make donations directly to any US Bank into the trust. from FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV | News, Weather, Sports http://fox4kc.com/2017/08/12/community-in-mourning-gives-final-farewell-to-clinton-police-officer-gary-michael/ from https://kansascityhappenings.wordpress.com/2017/08/12/community-in-mourning-gives-final-farewell-to-clinton-police-officer-gary-michael/ Mayor James’ “Sly’s Rock the Block” was rescheduled as a daytime event because of safety concerns raised by violence in past years. from Local News | KSHB http://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/safety-concerns-lead-to-changes-for-rock-the-block from https://kansascityhappenings.wordpress.com/2017/08/12/rock-the-block-changes-schedule-for-safety/ Well it’s getting to the point that you can’t check the internet…or watch the news without hearing something about the eclipse…which is a good thing for us from Downtown KC (more on that specific location at the end of the blog) northwards especially. This really is going to be a once in a lifetime event. The problem with “once in a lifetime events” is that sometimes things can go “poof” on you…and what will create that “poof”…clouds (lots of them) and or rain. I’m writing this 9 days before the eclipse actually happens and I’m seeing meteorologists who should know better actually try and forecast the weather for a 5 minute to 2 hour period 9 days out…that’s a joke. There is little to no skill in forecasting that type of scenario. Sure I could say there may be “clouds around”…so what else is new? That though is an aside…the forecasts will get better a few days before the eclipse and hopefully, depending on the weather pattern that sets up, we should have a good idea the day beforehand. In reality though…if we can get a return back to more “typical” August weather…I like our chances… That’s not why I started this blog…what I want to do with this blog is create something that you can easily share with your friends…relatives…students (hello teachers) and family about some of the basics that A) you may have forgotten from school and B) that you may not have thought about. So let’s get started… 1) What is a total solar eclipse? That really should be a starting point right. There are different types of eclipses…lunar…annular…partial and total. Total solar eclipses happen virtually every year or so. To have one though come across your community though is a rare thing indeed. The last one for KC was back in 1806 I believe. Totality lasted for over 4 minutes in KC! Here is a map showing the 1806 path… So IF you miss this one…when is the next one…well it’s going to be a while…and I guarantee you WON’T see it…odds are your children won’t either. There is another one that will just barely graze KC…that will be in July of 2205! So I’m proving my point to you…total solar eclipses are rare for any one point in the world! Again though what is a total solar eclipse? Basically it occurs because of several factors that have to line up perfectly. I think we know about the sun already…it’s some 93 million miles from the earth. The earth orbits around the sun. In addition to that, about 240,000 miles away the moon orbits around the earth.
Every so often, about every 18 months…the moon’s orbit get’s right between the earth and the sun in a perfect arrangement that a total solar eclipse can occur. Basically the sun’s light hits the far side of the moon…then a shadow is cast to the surface of the earth…where that shadow is maximized, in the case of the one coming on 8/21…you get a total solar eclipse. Keeping in mind that the earth’s orbit fluctuates and the moon’s orbit has slight variations every year…it takes a small miracle to get one in your community. Lo’ and behold though here we go. 2) Are there different eclipses? Yes! There is a lunar eclipse…when the earth blocks out the sun’s light and casts a shadow on the moon…there are partial solar eclipses…when part of the moon blocks out the light hitting the earth’s surface and then there is something called an annular eclipse. This occurs when the moon blocks out most of the sun’s light because the moon appears smaller than the sun. Again this though will be a TOTAL solar eclipse. 3) So IF I’m not in the path of TOTALITY…it will still be neat right? Well yes…and a bit now though. In a total solar eclipse TOTALITY means EVERYTHING. Areas just south of downtown KC will experience a partial eclipse. While more than 99% of the sun will be blocked…it’s NOT TOTAL. So yes…very cool but… 4) What’s the big deal about TOTALITY? I can’t stress this enough…some say it’s almost life changing…to see something that odds are you may never see again. From a safety standpoint…more on this later…it’s the ONLY time you can TAKE OFF the filtered glasses and watch what happens. From mere seconds to over 2 minutes and 35 seconds (depending on where you are in the area) you may see something like this… That is the “money shot”. You get to see the sun’s corona…you may get to see some of the “prominences”. These are solar gases/filaments that erupt from the sun’s surface and typically loop back around. The material of a prominence is called plasma and because of magnetic fields on the sun…the appear tangled and twisted. IF you get to witness that (again ONLY without the filtered glasses) you’ll NEVER see that again in person probably…that’s the KEY about TOTALITY! 5) So that’s great…who are the lucky ones to have at least a chance to see something like this? Here is a NASA map showing the area that gets TOTALITY The times represent the approximate time of totality…the lines within the shadow represent the length of time of TOTALITY. Notice metro KC is bisected really. One other IMPORTANT note. There is a matter of the sun’s precise size as this moment approaches a particular area. This is where things get a bit messy perhaps for the far southern and northern edge (literally the apprx. 1 mile edge or so of this TOTALITY). The sun is never in a steady state…it’s constantly and subtly growing and shrinking. Not a lot mind you…but enough that some astronomers are saying that the far edge of TOTALITY could easily be OFF by 1/2 mile or so. With the far southern edge coming right into the Downtown KC area that is not good. We won’t know till it happens or not though for downtown KC. Here is a map and it shows that IF the NASA track is off by just a small amount…1/2 mile-2 miles…parts of Downtown may just BARELY miss out. 6) So how can I guarantee I see something amazing? Drive north into Platte County…or really north of the MO River…if you can go 5-10 miles farther north of the EDGE of the map above…good for you. Assuming the cloud cooperate of course. OK that’s it for part 1…more to come as we get closer to the blog day. Joe

(AP) — Hundreds of people are facing off in Charlottesville ahead of a white nationalist rally planned in the Virginia city’s downtown. Rally supporters and counter-protesters screamed, chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles and unleashed chemical sprays on each other Saturday morning. Men dressed in militia uniforms were carrying shields and openly carrying long guns. Right-wing blogger Jason Kessler planned what he called a “pro-white” rally to protest Charlottesville’s decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. City officials declared a local emergency shortly after 11 a.m. Colleen Cook, 26, stood on a curb shouting at the rally attendees to go home. Among those expected to attend are Confederate heritage groups, KKK members, militia groups and “alt-right” activists, who generally espouse a mix of racism, white nationalism and populism. Both the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which track extremist groups, said the event has the potential to be the largest of its kind in at least a decade. Officials have been preparing for the rally for months. Virginia State Police will be assisting local authorities, and a spokesman said the Virginia National Guard “will closely monitor the situation and will be able to rapidly respond and provide additional assistance if needed.” Police instituted road closures around downtown, and many businesses in the popular open-air shopping mall opted to close for the day. Both local hospitals said they had taken precautions to prepare for an influx of patients and had extra staff on call. There were also fights Friday night, when hundreds of white nationalists marched through the University of Virginia campus carrying torches. A university spokesman said one person was arrested and several people were injured. Charlottesville Mayor Michael Signer said he was disappointed that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed President Donald Trump for inflaming racial prejudices with his campaign last year. “I’m not going to make any bones about it.
